Connecting X to Ruut Chat

What it is

Connecting X brings your X (formerly Twitter) Chat conversations into your Ruut Chat workspace. Messages sent to your X account arrive in a Ruut inbox, and your team can read and reply to them without sharing the X login. The connection runs through Ruut Connect, a small browser extension that links your X account to your workspace with your permission.

Why it matters

When X messages live in one person's account, they get missed, nobody else can answer them, and there's no record in your workspace. Once X is connected, those conversations land in your Ruut inbox next to your other channels, so anyone on your team can pick them up, assign them, and reply.

What to know before you connect

This channel works a little differently from most, so it's worth reading before you start.

  • What gets shared. Connecting shares your X session and its Chat signing and decryption keys with Ruut. This is what allows your team to receive and reply to messages. Ruut stores these encrypted.

  • What doesn't get shared. Your PIN and message history are not copied by the extension.

  • You stay in control. You choose which account to connect, and you can disconnect in Ruut at any time to remove this access.

  • Current limits. One-to-one text conversations are supported.

Before you start

Have ready:

  • A computer with Chrome.

  • The Ruut Connect extension installed. It's the same extension used for LinkedIn, so if you've already set it up, you can skip this. If not, follow the install steps in our LinkedIn guide first.

  • Admin access to your Ruut Chat workspace, so you can add an inbox

  • Your X login for the exact account you want to connect, and the passcode you use to unlock X Chat

How to set it up: step by step

Step 1: Open Workspaces and click "Add Inbox"

In Ruut Chat, open Settings → Workspaces and click Add Inbox in the top right. The setup wizard has four stages: Choose Channel → Create Workspace → Add Agents → Voilà. On the first stage, select X.

Step 2: Name your workspace and continue

On the Connect X screen, enter a Workspace name that makes this inbox easy to recognise later, for example "Support X" or the name of your brand. Read the note on screen: Ruut Connect will ask permission to securely share your session and Chat keys, then bring you back here to confirm your profile. Click Continue with X.

Step 3: Sign in to X

Ruut Connect opens with three stages: Account access → Verify → Confirm in Ruut. Click Open X to sign in, then sign in to the X account you want to connect, in the same browser. If you chose the wrong account, click Cancel this connection and start again.

Step 4: Unlock X Chat if asked

X may show an Enter Passcode screen asking for the temporary passcode sent to your device. Enter the four digits to continue. If nothing arrives, click Resend passcode.

Step 5: Review access and allow it

Back on the Ruut Connect page, you'll see "Your X session is ready. Review access below to continue." Read the Your account, connected securely note, then tick the box that says Allow Ruut to use this X session and Chat keys for this workspace. The Connect this X account button stays greyed out until the box is ticked. Click it when ready.

Step 6: Confirm your X account in Ruut

Ruut brings you back to the wizard with a Confirm your X account card showing the account name and handle. It also confirms that your session, Chat keys, and realtime connection have been verified. Check that it's the right account, then click Connect workspace to start receiving messages. Click Cancel if it isn't.

Step 7: Add agents to the inbox

On the Add Agents stage, open the Pick agents for the inbox dropdown, select the teammates who should handle X messages, and click Add agents. Only the agents you select here can see and reply to messages in this inbox. If you're an administrator and want access to every inbox, add yourself too.

Step 8: Your inbox is ready

When the last stage finishes, Ruut confirms your inbox is ready. Open it to start receiving and replying to X messages.

If you open Ruut Connect on its own

If you open the Ruut Connect extension directly, you'll see a page titled **"A simple connection. A shared workspace."**listing LinkedIn and X as Available. This page doesn't start a connection by itself. Click Open Ruut, then begin from Settings → Workspaces as in Step 1.

Final checklist

  • You're on a computer using Chrome.

  • The Ruut Connect extension is installed and switched on

  • You signed in to the correct X account

  • You ticked the permission box before connecting

  • The Confirm your X account card showed the right name and handle

  • You added the agents who need access

  • A test message sent to your X account appears in the new inbox

Common problems

The Connect this X account button is greyed out — The permission box isn't ticked yet. Tick Allow Ruut to use this X session and Chat keys for this workspace, and the button becomes active.

No passcode arrives — Click Resend passcode on the X screen and check the device(it will be an alternate device that your X account is logged in to) X says it sent the code to.

The wrong X account shows on the confirmation card — Click Cancel, sign out of X in that browser, sign in to the right account, and connect again.

Teammates can't see the X inbox — Only agents added to the inbox can see its messages. Add them from the inbox settings, or in the Add Agents stage during setup.

You want to stop sharing access — Disconnect the X inbox in Ruut. This removes the access you granted.

What's next

Once X is connected, set up labels and automation to route X conversations to the right people, and consider connecting LinkedIn the same way so your social inboxes live in one place.
